Fishing along the Småland Trail

If you want to combine hiking with fishing along the Smålandsleden trail, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

Fishing licenses and permits

  • Fishing licenses: Most lakes and waterways in Småland require a fishing license. Check which lakes and waterways you will be passing and which fishing licenses apply to each area. You can often buy fishing licenses online or at local sales outlets such as gas stations or shops near the trails.
  • Exceptions to fishing licenses: Some coastal areas and lakes may have exceptions to fishing licenses, but it is important to double-check the rules for the specific area you want to fish in.

Respect fishing seasons and regulations

  • Seasonal regulations: Certain fish species have protected periods when it is prohibited to fish for them, such as during the spawning season. Make sure you follow the local regulations for fishing seasons.
  • Minimum sizes and catch limits: Many waters have rules regarding minimum fish sizes and how many fish you can take home per day. This applies, for example, to pike, perch, and trout.

Right of public access and fishing

  • Fishing is not always permitted under the right of public access: Unlike staying and hiking in nature, fishing is not covered by the right of public access. You must follow the rules for fishing licenses and other local regulations.
  • Respect private property: If you pass private property along the trail, make sure you do not fish from piers or other private areas without permission.

Safety when fishing

  • Fire safety on fishing trips: If you plan to barbecue or cook your catch over a fire, use designated fire pits and follow any fire regulations or prohibitions.
  • Life jacket: If you plan to fish from a boat in any of the waterways, always wear a life jacket for your safety.

Packing for overnight stays and fishing

  • If you are combining fishing with an overnight stay in a wind shelter, it is practical to bring a small frying pan or grill rack if you want to cook your fish. Salt, pepper, and a little butter are simple accessories that do not take up much space.

Environment and sustainability

  • Leave no trash behind: Take all trash home with you, including fishing lines and packaging. Try not to leave anything behind that could harm animals or destroy nature.
  • Release fish gently: If you catch a fish that you do not plan to keep, release it as gently as possible so as not to harm it unnecessarily.
