Tips for your hike

Here are some tips on what to consider before hiking along the Smålandsleden trail.

Plan your route

Before setting out, it is a good idea to plan your route:

  • Choose a stage: Check which stage of the Smålandsleden trail you want to hike and calculate the distance. Consider how long the hike will take, including breaks.
  • Map and navigation: Download a map or use the Naturkartan app to get a good overview of the trail and find any interesting stops along the way.
  • Schedule: Make sure you have enough time to walk at a comfortable pace and return before dark.
  • Safety: Tell someone that you are going hiking and which stage or stages you intend to hike.

Hiking equipment

It helps to have the right equipment:

  • Hiking boots: Choose comfortable and waterproof hiking boots that provide good support for your feet, especially if you are walking on uneven ground.
  • Clothing: Think layers upon layers. A moisture-wicking base layer, a mid layer for warmth (such as fleece), and a windproof or waterproof outer layer are good for adapting your clothing to the weather.
  • Rainwear: It's a good idea to pack rainwear, even if the weather looks good. Rain showers can come quickly.
  • Backpack: A small, lightweight backpack to carry what you need during the day is a good idea. Make sure it is comfortable to carry over long distances.

Food and drink

Remember that you need energy and fluids to keep you going:

  • Food: Pack a lunch that will give you energy throughout the day, such as sandwiches, nuts, fruit, or energy bars. Choose items that are easy to carry and will not spoil during the hike.
  • Water: Bring enough water for the entire hike. There are often water sources along the trail, but it is a good idea to bring your own if you are unsure.

Safety and comfort

To have with you during the hike:

  • First aid kit: A small kit with bandages, pain relief, and other small necessities is always good to have with you.
  • Flashlight: A small flashlight or headlamp can be useful if you are delayed and it starts to get dark.
  • Navigation: Bring a compass or phone with GPS in case you need help finding your way if you stray from the trail.
  • Cell phone: Bring your cell phone; we cannot guarantee coverage in all locations, but you can always call 112 regardless of your operator. Don't forget a power bank if you are out for a long time.

Enjoy nature

Hiking is as much about enjoying nature as it is about physical challenge:

  • Take photos and document your trip: Bring a camera or mobile phone to capture the beautiful landscapes and memorable moments along the way.
  • Respect nature: Remember to follow the right of public access and leave no trace behind. Leave the area as you found it and take all your trash home with you.

Overnight stays (if you want to extend your hike)

If you want to extend your trip with an overnight stay, it's a good idea to plan ahead:

  • Wind shelters and overnight stays: Check if there are any wind shelters along the trail where you can stay for the night. Smålandsleden offers several marked places for overnight stays. Leave the area as you found it and take all your rubbish home with you.
  • Equipment for overnight stays: Pack a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, and possibly a light bivouac sack if you plan to stay overnight.
