Highlands Trail Stage HÖ5 - Gold Rush and Fault Lines

Category: Nature reserve

The route is rich in natural experiences and cultural environments, and offers an exciting history.

You will pass through two different nature reserves:

Djupaskuran offers dramatic terrain and many rare species. Mosses and fungi thrive in the humid environment, and plenty of dead wood of various kinds gives rise to a fireworks display of different species.

Tjusthult, where you can wander among stately old pine trees on lichen-covered rocks, or go down to the moss and get acquainted with the insect-eating plant sundew. The primeval forest and the large amount of dead wood allow species that need old-growth forest to live here.

Along the route, you will also pass Sweden's oldest gold mine and the industrial area that was formed in Ädelfors during the 18th and 19th centuries as a result of mining. Here you can try your hand at gold panning and stay overnight.

One suggestion for hiking along this stage is to start in Ädelfors and hike north, visit Djupaskuran and, once there, continue towards Tjusthult or turn back, visit the mine and finish in Ädelfors again with gold panning.
